Stanbic Bank Kenya has announced the appointment of Michael Mutiga as its incoming Chief Executive Officer, a move that highlights the growing convergence between traditional banking and digital telecommunications.

Mutiga, who currently serves as the Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer at Safaricom, is scheduled to assume his new role on August 1, 2026, pending regulatory clearance.

Bridging Telecoms and Banking

The appointment marks Mutiga's return to the banking sector after a four-year tenure at Safaricom, where he was instrumental in driving the strategic direction of one of the continent's most prominent digital financial platforms. Prior to his time at the telecommunications giant, Mutiga built an extensive career in investment banking.

This leadership transition reflects an industry-wide trend where financial institutions increasingly seek executives with deep expertise in digital-first ecosystems to steer their operations.
